The Healing Value of Gems, Minerals and Stones
Throughout the generations of people, gems, minerals and stones were believed to posses healing qualities. Ancient medicinal traditions involved gems, minerals, and stones as an integral aid in helping the ill and injured. Because I have always been drawn to rocks (I used to have tons of coffee cans filled with them while growing up. Now, everywhere I go I seem to find a 'special' rock to take home as a memento) I thought it would be fun to share some information that I have come across in my search for healing resources.
This information I am sharing was given to me by a dear friend, but the original sources are from Crystal Connections by Bill Harris; Crystal Enlightenment and Crystal Healing, by Katrina Raphaell; and Crystal Wisdom, by Dolfyn.

Definitions of Healing Values of Gems, Minerals and Stones
Before using any gem, mineral, or stone for healing, it is important that you cleanse your piece. There are a number of ways in which to do such a cleansing to recharge your gem, mineral or stone so I have included a link to a page I believe contains some very good suggestions. I simply found this page by googling "how to cleanse a healing stone", which you are welcome to explore more pages/resources on your own. My search discovered: 
Holistic Healing Just click and the link will carry you to the info and you can cleanse away. Actinolite: Green. This stone is associated with creative expression, appreciation of beauty and spontaneity. Excellent stone for improving visualizations and mental imagery.
Agate: Courage; symbolizes third eye; gives a spiritual love of truth.
Albite / Feldspar: Associated with stability, steadiness and constancy. Inspires us to become spiritual leaders by sharing our unique truths.
Alexandrite: Inner and outer regenerations; works on the crown chakra; brings general good fortune.
Almandine: A red garnet with a violet tint. Brings spirituality to relationships. Helps in the transition from romance to a spiritual commitment in love.
Amazonite: Perfecting personal expressions. Strengthens nervous system; used in ancient Egypt. Grounding personal expression.
Amber: Does not emit strong healing energy but does have the power to draw dis-ease from the body. It can absorb the negative energy and help the body to heal itself. Always cleanse it after each use. Associated with gold-orange (naval chakra) and grounding of energies into the physical body. Can be used with suicidal tendencies or those who do not want to be in physical body or who get depressed easily.
Amblygonite: A golden-yellow to clear color. Is said to increase a feeling of one's own worth. It helps to develop empathy, self-confidence, and thoughtfulness towards others.
Amethyst: Spiritual awareness, meditation, balance, physic abilities, inner peace, humility, positive transformation. Surrendering mind to highest part of one's self. Very healing of body, mind and soul. Ability to see divine perfection in all things. Devotion. Highest vibration of the third eye. Good for easing tension/migraine headaches. Inspires sweet dreams, relieves nightmares.
Andalusite: Yellow, green, or brownish-red. Is said to promote business and career success, ascendancy, authority, leadership ability. It helps us to become powerful and then to use our power wisely and for the good.
Anglesite: A white metallic mineral. Promotes sensitivity, gentleness, relaxation and tenderness.
Anorthite / Feldspar: A calcium feldspar. The color is usually white, gray or glassy. It is associated with balance, wholeness, integration, stability and grounding.
Apatite: Enhances flow of communication. Clears confusion in the mental stratus. Positive use of personal power. Manifest goals.
Aquamarine: Expressing universal truths, prophecy, inspiration and wise use of inner power. It is attuned with the ocean. Soothes, calms and alleviates fears. Ability to verbalize. Expressing truth through power of spoken word.
Aragonite: A form of calcite. Colors are usually white, cream, or gray. It is said to foster truth, emotional and mental stability, inner understanding and clear perception.
Arizona Agate: Is linked with sensuality, pleasure, emotional warmth, earthiness, happiness, cheerfulness.
Augite: Green to black. Is associated with prosperity, success, good fortune and luck. It helps us be at the right place at the right time.
Autinite: Green. Is said to foster courage, daring, new beginnings and adventures. It is protective of those who are young and free and willing to take a chance.
Axinite: Blue, violet, or brown. Helps us activate our spiritual beliefs on the earth plane. Teaches us to live our spirituality in daily life.
Azurite: Dissolves limited concepts. Motivates higher thinking by surfacing deep subconscious thought patterns to be examined by the conscious awareness. Can be used over any part of the body where there is a physical blockage or congestion. as it penetrates and moves the energy, the reasons for the blockage will surface to be dealt with.
Barite: Wide color range. Is linked with platonic love, friendship, loyalty, love and relationships. This is a stone of interpersonal communication and intimacy.
Benitoite: Light to dark blue. Is associated with emotional sensitivity, empathy and understanding.
Beryl: Clear Beryl (aka Goshenite) increases intellectual abilities, wisdom and the capacity to see things from all sides. Golden Beryl (aka Heliodor) brings persistence, altruism, spirituality, healing, strength, learning, communication and comfort. Pink Beryl (aka Morganite or Bixbite) fosters tolerance, empathy, love, acceptance and a "live and let live" attitude.
Beryllium: Is associated with altered states, meditation and cosmic consciousness.
Black Obsidian: Base chakra. It acts as a magnet that draws the spirit forces into the body to be governed by the conscious will for use in physical action. Should be used only when educated about its power. It bluntly shows the ego-self where it is at and what it needs to change in order to advance. Acts as a mirror that reflects the flaws in one's nature and magnifies the fears, insecurities and egocentric attitudes that suppress the soul's superior qualities. The warrior of truth. Awakening of dormant unmanifested potential.
Black Onyx: Promotes increased vigor, strength, stamina at the root chakra. Valuable in difficult or confusing times. Grounds spirit forces in body. Gain ability to work lovingly on the physical plane.
Blue Lace Agate: Peaceful melodious flow of expression; cleansing, soothing to the emotions. A powerful stone of joy. Ability to verbalize. Expressing truth through power of the spoken word.
Bloodstone: Very powerful cleanser for the physical body. Purifies blood. Cleansing, energizing of physical vehicle.
Bornite: A metallic mineral with a purple tarnish. Is associated with peace, social justice, goodness, fairness, truth and equality. It fosters caring on a world wide scale, teaching us to be concerned with the welfare of all beings on earth.
Botswana Agate: Quartz. A banded agate that is said to augment protection, fertility, sensuality, sexuality, passion, artistic expression and emotional comfort.
Brazilianite: Yellow or greenish-yellow. Is associated with academic achievement, attention to detail, improved study skills and increased intelligence.
Bronze: Is associated with relaxation, serenity, calmness. Helps promote a laid-back attitude.
Calcite: Mental healer stone. Releases old outdated concepts and the acknowledgments of new ones. Memory, greater intellectual capacity.
Carnelian: Symbol of strength and beauty of our planet. Serves as a grounder of energies and as a manifester on the physical plane. Good for people who are absent minded or confused. Useful at the navel chakra for infertility or impotence.
Cassiterite: A tin oxide, usually brown or black. Less often red, gray, or yellow. Cassiterite is said to promote productivity, practicality and organization. It empowers us in worldly endeavors and practical pursuits.
Cat's Eye: Also known as Cymophane. Builds determination, strength of mind, steadfastness, will power, moral courage, tenacity, vigor, resolve, self-control, intelligence and knowledge. It also fosters constancy, stability, and the ability to weather all storms.
Celestite: Ability to verbalize. Expressing truth through the power of the spoken word. Associated with the throat chakra. Attunes one to higher mind and divine guidance. Communication with cosmic beings and beings of light.
Cerussite: Clear, gray brown. Inspires contentment and a feeling of thankfulness. Teaches us how to pray.
Chalcedony: Quartz. Usually gray, but may also be brown, black, blue or white. Augments emotional balance, vitality, stamina, endurance, energy, intensity, hardiness, nurturance, generosity, liveliness, kindness, charity and friendliness. This stone imparts a mothering, loving energy.
Chalcopyrite: A brassy gold copper ore with a green tint. Enhances feelings of self-worth, confidence and belief in oneself.
Chlorite: Usually green, less often white, brown or black. A stone of the Goddess. Protective of women, nature and those who love and protect the wild places and animals.
Chrysoberyl: The color ranges from yellow to green to brown. It is said to promote kindness, generosity, benevolence, hope, optimism, renewal, compassion and forgiveness. This stone expresses springtime, youth, and innocence.
Chrysocalla (Gem Silica): Used to develop the virtues of patience, kindness, tolerance, compassion and humility. Inspires soul to surrender and yield to the latent divine forces of one's own nature. Feminine energy, ideal for use with feminine disorders, birth process, miscarriages, etc. Emotional balance. Peace stone. Cooling stone to reduce fevers, heal burns, neutralize anger and calm frazzled nerves. Throat chakra. Also works as a "seeing" stone which allows you to view past and future events. Speaking one's own Truth. Consciously channel higher realms.
Chrysoprase: To manifest earth plane power. Enhances insight into personal problems; aids tranquillity; Swedenborg said this gem manifests the supreme heavenly love of truth.
Cinnabar: Also known as mercury. Usually red. Helps us to be vigorous, forceful, impelling and energetic. Excellent for those who need to be more assertive.
Citrine: Naval chakra. It's energy is like the sun: warming, comforting, penetrating, energizing and life giving. Physical and material power. Exists to assist in attracting the riches of the earth to us. Perfect stone to use to strengthen the psychic and physical bodies. Best stone to use for business, education, interpersonal relationships or family matters. Develop self-discipline to live in higher awareness. Assimilation of experience. Digestion.
Clinozoisite: Light green to brownish-green. Teaches us to care for ourselves and not to let others take advantage of us.
Cobalt: Fosters channeling, communication with the higher forces, balance and praying. Helps make our prayers more effective and to give thanks.
Cobaltite: The color is silver. Is associated with reflection, meditation and re-evaluation. It promotes thoughtfulness and careful consideration. It allows us to see all sides of an issue and therefore fosters tolerance.
Colemanite: Translucent. Helps us become more yin; gentler, sweeter quieter. Excellent for "macho" men. Helps us to mellow out.
Copper: Creates awareness of self; achieves balance within all levels of self; can be used to achieve total amplification of thought.
Coral: Good for keeping thoughts in control for visualization and while meditating.
Covellite: A blue metallic mineral with a purple or black tarnish. Helps us focus our energy and expend it with direction and effectiveness.
Cuprite: Red. Makes us more helpful to others and more attentive to moral duties. Encourages pragmatism and focus.
Danburite: Colorless, pink or yellow. Increases patience, tolerance, serenity, peace of mind.
Datolite: Greenish. Builds clarity of thought, concentration, improved study skills, flow of ideas, mature thought.
Dentritic Agate: Quartz. Associated with safe travel, general protection, loyalty and tranquillity.
Desautekite: Is associated with clairvoyance, psychic abilities, and seeing the future. Helps us during any kind of divination, such as Tarot, I-Ching, palmistry and so forth.
Diabase: Makes one more potent, forceful, powerful, effectual, capable, and strong. Its dynamic energy lends intensity to all who keep it near.
Diamond: Identification with the immortal part of one's self. Attunement to higher forces. Said to bond relationships and encourage innocence, love, clarity, and hope.
Diopside: Rejuvenation of heart chakra. A light to dark green (rarely yellow or clear). Member of the pyroxene clan. Helps us become more appreciative of life.
Dioptase: Green. Relieves mental stress and promotes prosperity, relaxation, meditation, love and emotional expressiveness. Is said to be healing of mind and body.
Dumortierite: Dark blue, violet blue or reddish brown. Promotes harmony, orderliness, precision, self-discipline and the ability to organize. Helps us become more businesslike, systematic, tidy and methodical.
Eilat: A Chrysocolla containing turquoise and malachite. Helps us to become more agreeable, harmonious and social. Inspires protection, self-understanding, subconscious wisdom and general healing.
Emerald: Powerful subtle body healing. Meditation; healing; business success; it rejects negative; precognition. This is the truth-promoting stone, inspiring deep knowing from within.
Enargite: Green, brownish-green, gray, yellow. Is associated with sages, medicine men and women, shamans, priests and priestesses. Helps us develop our wisest, highest self. Help us find our inner guide.
Enstatite: Green, gray, yellow or brownish-green. Promotes loyalty, devotion, memory and channeling abilities.
Epidote: The color ranges form green to brown to black. Also called Pistacite. Epidote is associated with protection, empowerment, change, growth, maturity, evolution and positive transformation. This is a stone of harvest and fulfillment.
Euclase: Colorless, green, or light blue. Facilitates benevolence, selflessness, generosity and altruism.
Fairy Stone: An iron-aluminum silicate. Brown to black in color. Also known as Staurolite or fairy cross. Fairy stones are associated with luck, positive magic, happiness, love of life, enthusiasm and a love of nature. This stone helps us communicate with plants and animals.
Fern Agate: Helps us communicate with plants. Attunes us to the world of Devas (Nature Spirits).
Fire Agate: Grounds; balances and transforms one into the quality of harmony.
Flint: A gray, black or brown member of the quartz clan. Flint augments loyalty, courage, protection, boldness, daring, self-reliance, inner power, interpersonal communication, inspiration and overcoming shyness.
Fluorite: Utilization of visionary insight. Manifests the highest aspect of the mind-the mind that is attuned to spirit. Enables one to stay attuned to the source while functioning on the physical plane. Third eye chakra. Brings onto the physical plane higher forms of truth and integrates those concepts into the mind, which in turn manifests on the material plane. Can be used in mental illness or brain wave frequency disturbances. "Genius stone" for it represents the highest state of mental achievement.
Fuchsite: Green. Promotes diplomacy, finesse, discretion, imagination, creativity and appreciation for beauty.
Galena: Alleviates emotional problems that block spiritual growth.
Garnet: Inspires romantic love, passion, sensuality; increases creative energy. Excellent value for infertility, sterility and frigidity. Creates stimulation of blood flow. Grounds spirit forces in body. Gain ability to work lovingly on the physical plane. Utilization of creative energy.
Geodes: Foster intellectual insight, awareness and community. Geodes help us attract compatible friends and lovers and teach us to live in harmony with each other.
Gold: Is associated with virtue, moral excellence, nobility of mind, purification, happiness, honor, wealth, strength of will, generosity, positive thoughts, energy, good humor, courage, stability, luck and opportunity. This metal stimulates action and ennobles the character.
Goshenite: A clear Beryl. Promotes practical wisdom, moderation, intellectual curiosity and well-thought-out decisions. Helps those who have a hard time making decision.
Granite: Encourages us to go with the flow, and helps us find our highest path. Teaches us to live in a stage of grace.
Grossularite: A type of garnet. This stone enhances energy, prosperity and career success.
Gypsum: A sedimentary rock, usually colorless or white. Augments prosperity, good luck, resolve, purpose, steady effort, career success, strength of character and will. Inspires us to make our dreams come true.
Halite: Helps us transcend our problems. Encourages perspective and contentment.
Hambergite: Helps us stick to our beliefs. Fosters idealism, character and truth.
Hauynite: A transparent blue. Helps us gain respect, honor, esteem and admiration.
Hawk's Eye (Falcon's Eye): Power stone of the base chakra. Best stone to use where you are working with negative patterns that are manifesting into physical dis-ease, as it brings a peaceful healing ray directly into the body.
Heliodore (Gold): Connects one with wisdom of high self.
Hematite: Grounds; increases capacity for astral projection. Enhances focus, trust, confidence.
Hemimorphite: Aka Calamine. Blue, green, clear. Fosters enthusiasm, optimism, high energy and the ability to stay excited about a project right through to the end.
Herkimer Diamonds: One of the best stones for clearing and dissolving emotionally tense or congested areas. Great for an extra boost of energy.
Hiddenite: Grants spiritual attainment, enlightenment, universal compassion, transcendence and peace.
Howlite: Snowy white, sometimes with brown or black veins. Rarely clear. Foster appreciation of beauty, inspiration, creativity and artistic expression.
Hypersthene: Enhances self-esteem, emotional expression and overcoming shyness. Helps put us at ease in all social situations.
Imperial Jade: Prophetic dreams enacted on physical level.
Iolite: Varying hues of blue. Enhances leadership ability, power, inner strength, self confidence and executive ability.
Iris Agate: Fosters truth, honor, joy, physical well being, popularity and long life. Teaches us to appreciate physical pleasure and nature.
Iron: Traditionally said to promote balance, strength, endurance, protection, longevity, persistence, emotional stability, favorable legal situations.
Ivory: Grounds physical assertiveness.
Jade: The Dream Stone. Peace; tranquillity; soothes eyes and emotions; wisdom; universal attunement. Red/Gold Jade: receiving master teachings through dreams.
Jadeite: Emotional release through dreams. Encourages emotional balance, a sense of well-being and healing dreams.
Jasper: Is associated with realization, contentment, compassion, nurturing, consolation, tranquillity, completion, wholeness, healing and gentle endings.
Kornerupine: Enhances teaching ability, eloquence, communication and clarity.
Kunzite: Heart chakra. Kunzite manifests the matured state of heart; open, clear, secure, strong, vibrant, radiant, balanced and loving. Connects one to their own infinite source of love, their own essence. Pure expression of joy in thoughts and feelings. Good stone for children who are having a hard time adjusting to and functioning in life. Also a good stone to be worn by star children or walk-ins to help them adjust to earth plane environments and energy.
Kyanite (aka Disthene): Augments channeling and altered states. Encourages vivid dreams, clear visualization, loyalty, honesty and serenity.
Labradorite: Promotes physic abilities, spiritual powers, strength of will and feeling of inner worth. Labradorite strengthens and protects our aura and teaches us to use mystical power wisely and well. Aids in communicating with our highest self and with the Creator.
Lapis: Serves as a mental and spiritual cleanser. Penetrates subconscious blockages and illusion of the mind. Draws the mind inward to seek its own source of power. Helps us to contact our spirit guardians. Clearing subconscious to channel intuition.
Lavender: Psychic understanding of dreams. Enhances sleep for dream state.
Lepiodolite: Balances emotional and mental bodies; aids hyperactivity.
Leucite: encourages reconciliation with friends and lovers. Facilitates tolerance and empathy.
Limestone: Is said to enhance healing, purification, innocence, centeredness and positive thoughts.
Llanoite: Encourages individuality, expressiveness, originality and creativity. Helps us to unfold our own unique personality.
Ludlamite: A relaxation stone fostering comfort, ease, rest, repose and mellowness. Good for workaholics.
Magnetite: A black iron ore. It is a magnetized stone. Magnetite attracts love, good luck and health. It is linked to stability, strength and perspective. Teaches mental telepathy, allowing us to project our thought and to amplify our visualizations and prayers.
Malachite: Emotional responsibility and balance. Assists in grounding higher energies onto the planet. Absorbs energy instead of penetrating, therefore it is excellent to use to draw out disease and pain. It will draw out, surface and reflect that which is impeding spiritual growth. Best used over the solar plexus to clear static or repressed emotions. Releases emotionally suppressed trauma. Soul/heart consciousness (cleanse after each use).
Marble: Encourages gentleness, tenderness and love. Teaches us the art of listening.
Marcasite (aka White Pyrite): Inspires realization, reflection, spiritual development, focus and clarity. It encourages past life recall and awakens ancient memories.
Melanite: A black type of Andrite. Garnet clan. Opens our psychic vision for forecasting, divination and seeing the future. Brings and understanding and acceptance of death. Reminds us of rebirth, reincarnation and the endless nature of life.
Meteorite: Shooting stars that land on earth. Augment cosmic wisdom, channeling, celestial love, communication with angelic realm and space beings, and psychic powers. Aid in the evolution of human kind accelerating our mental growth and abilities.
Millerite: Promotes reason, moderation, tolerance, frugality and efficiency.
Moldavite: A green meteorite. Especially good for channeling healing energy. Helps us to communicate with our higher self and with extra-terrestrials.
Molybdenite: Soft, metallic and opaque with a blue-gray streak. Helps us tap subconscious knowledge. Teaches to face our hidden self. Helps us to develop our character.
Moonstone: Helps to soothe and balance the emotions. Very useful for women during menstration cycle to assist in physical harmony and emotional equilibrium. Epitomizes the astrological sign of Libra, the ultimate balance achieved by neutralizing negative emotions.
Morganite: (Pink) Purifies and softens high heart octave.
Moss Agate: Moss agates are associates with prosperity, success, abundance, congeniality, compatibility, healing, rain, restoration, fertility of plants, protection of the earth, creativity, confidence and strength. This stone is helpful when starting new friendships or when seeking a compatible lover. Also helps us communicate directly with animals, plants and all of nature.
Mother of Pearl: Inspires purity and tranquillity. Emotional balance and stability.
Muscovite: A pale, almost clear mica. Teaches astral projection and facilitates contact with angels and spirit guardians.
Natrolite: Is associated with achievement, success, victory and triumph. Helps us overcome challenges to reach our goals.
Nephtrite: Brings inner strength, fortitude, courage, protection, persistence and completion. Helps us stand our ground.
Nevada Jade (aka Nevada Lapis): Is linked with healing ability and forgiveness. Makes us more agreeable and more appreciative. Helps us become life-affirming.
Opal: Conscious intention of emotions. Contains water which will act upon the emotional body. It magnifies whatever emotional state is present. Use only when in good spirits to heighten that experience. Protect in moist cotton or on a Quartz cluster; do not store near heat.
Onyx (Black): Root chakra energy. (Brown): Grounds connection with the earth.
Pearl: Is associated with innocence, purity, goodness, nurturance and intimacy. Helps us choose friends and lovers wisely.
Periclase: Helps the overly intellectual to become more heart-centered and more grounded.
Peridot: Acts as a tonic to liven and quicken the entire chakra system to make it stronger, healthier and more radiant. Good stone to give to people who cannot relate to realities beyond the physical world.
Petalite: Is associated with inspiration, fertility and imagination. Highly spiritual. Has been called "The Stone of Angels" and will help one connect with one's guides.
Petrified Wood: Stabilizes person undergoing mental and emotional stress; aids individuals to past-life recall.
Phenacite: Helps those who have addictive personalities overcome their addictive habits. Especially good for those who are addicted to love and relationships.
Phosgenite: Is associated with boldness, courage, daring and confidence.
Prasiolite: A leek-green member of the Quartz clan. Inspires self-confidence and originality. Gives us the courage to dare new things.
Purpurite: Helps break away from self-destructive or self-limiting patterns, as well as exterior restraint. Promotes inner growth.
Pyrite: Eases anxiety, depression, frustration and false hopes; strengthens astral body.
Pyrolusite: Is associated with hope, optimism, confidence, determination, and material comfort.
Quartz Crystal: Raises one's vibration; bridges the material world with other realms; has ability to store, transmit and amplify energy; excellent for all types of healing and meditation. Infinite wisdom. Crown chakra. Can be used for all purposes as it vibrates the clear white light which contains all other colors. Quartz crystals represent perfected material, aligned and harmonized with the cosmic force. They channel high frequency energy onto the physical earth plane.
Artemis Crystal: Also called Candle Crystal. A long, thin clear quartz crystal with a sharp, undamaged point. Promotes independence, freedom and love of nature. Protective of women, children, wild places and wild creatures. This crystal combines strength, action and directness with sensitivity and kindness. Helps us focus and speed our prayers, visualizations and thought forms to their goal.
Blue Quartz: Also called Siderite. Inspires spiritual development, meditation psychic abilities and serenity.
Clusters: Can be placed in areas where you want to create a stronger healing vibration or where you want to they cleanse the atmosphere. To purify and recharge healing stone, crystals or jewelry, place them upon large clusters for at least three hours.
Crystal Balls: Pure Quartz Crystal Balls possess power that one must attune with and train to use. It has been a symbol of hidden wisdom and are objects of authority which can have great influence in the development of psychic abilities to see into the past or tune into the future.
Double Terminated Crystals: Have the capacity to draw in as well as emanate out energy from either end. Used in special meditations and advanced telepathic practices. Use on negative energy blocked in tissues, organs or aura of the body on top of or held above the affected areas.
Eight-Faceted Crystal: A clear quartz crystal with eight facets enhances energy, success, prosperity, accomplishment, power and the wise use of that power.

Hera Crystals: Aka Self-healed crystals. Clear quartz crystals that have been broken off at one end and grew one more terminations over the broken area. They promote renewal, birth, rebirth, immortality and self-healing powers.
Inner Child Crystal: A clear quartz crystal which has another, smaller crystal partially embedded in it. Helps us to go back to our childhood and heal the child within.
Lifepath Crystal: Aka Beauty Way Crystal. A long, thin clear quartz crystal with one or more totally smooth sides. This crystal helps us find our path in life. It also helps us go with the flow and walk a path filled with joy.
Meteor Crystals: A clear quartz crystal with a number of tiny craters indented on one side of the crystal, with a tail trailing from them. These shooting stars often fall in the same direction on any one side of the crystal.
